Astrology is mostly used to analyze planet’s positions on a day a person was born to analyze someone’s character. However, that is not the only branch of astrology that is out there and is being used by astrologers. Astrology can also be used as a tool to provide an insight into events that are going on around us, politics, can help us answer questions that we ask, analyze important historical events, and so on.
All elements surrounding us are sources of all different types of energy. Planets are very big elements and therefore their energy influences everything around us. The closer and bigger the planet, the bigger the influence is. Our ancestors new that planet’s positions have a big influence and used it sometimes even more than we do nowadays. For example, they used different positions of moon to determine right time for planting vegetables, grain and other plants to ensure the harvest would be rich. Some world cities ( such as Prague in the Czech Republic) even have an astrological clock, which shows not only position of sun within the zodiac, but also a position of a moon.
Astrology can be used widely in many areas. The following paragraphs I will try to introduce these “branches” of astrology in more detail.
1. Natal astrology
Natal astrology is the most commonly used branch of astrology. It is based on a concept that each individual is very much influenced by the position of planets on the exact date, time and location of the person’s birth. Astrologers usually construct a horoscope (sometimes called a natal chart) and use that horoscope for the interpretation, as part of which a complete picture of the personality of the person is constructed.
2. Horary astrology
If you visit an astrologer with a specific problem or a question, the astrologer may sometimes as a supplement to constructing your natal chart construct a horoscope for the exact moment that you raised the question. There are some disagreements between astrologers for what location should the horoscope be constructed – whether astrologer’s or the person’s that raised the question. I personally think that it is location of the person who asked the question that is important, and if question is about an event that is going to happen somewhere else than usual place where the person resides, than that location is important. I am quite interested to hear your opinion if you have any arguments for one or another.
Natal and Horary astrology can complement each other very well. Natal astrology can reveal overall influences on your personality that you work on during your life (your strengths and weaknesses), horary astrology can put this into a context of a specific question or a problem, that you are facing right now. Note that very seldom will an astrology provide a direct yes-no answer, good astrologer’s responsibility should be to help you understand what influences are out there and how you can work on getting where exactly you would like to be.
3. Mundane astrology
Mundane astrology (mundus = world in latin) applies astrology to some interesting world events such as events in politics, natural disasters, weather, etc. For example, many astrologers have analysed events such as explosion in Cernobyl nuclear power plant, sinking of Titanic, and so on. Have a look at here for an example of the Titanic event astrological analysis made by of an astrologer.
Two major approaches can be found to the study of mundane astrology:
- Creation and analysis of a “natal” horoscope for a country (or an area). This leads into existence of so called national horoscopes, which are in fact an equivalent of natal horoscopes in personal astrology – they are used to study national potential (character) and can be compared with a horoscope for a specific time, to see influences on that nation at a specific point in time, which can be used to understand country’s politics and other current affairs.
- Analysis of correlations between geological phenomena, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, hurricanes and astronomical phenomena (positions and movements of planets in the Solar System). In this case, astrologers usually analyze astrological horoscope for the exact date, time and location of the phenomena that has occurred.
4. Electional astrology
If you set up a company, sign an important contract, buy a house, get married, you can potentially create a horoscope for the specific date and time when the event took place. This will than describe forces that could have an influence during the whole duration, it is like creating a natal chart for whatever was born on that moment. For example, date and time of wedding can be very important in helping you to identify issues that the people need to work on to make sure they would be happy together in their marriage.
Don’t forget, horoscopes don’t have to be created only for past events. It is possible to create a chart for any particular time, even in future. Sometimes people contact astrologers to help them decide when would be a best time for the event to take place, for example, when would be the best time to get married.
5. Other uses of astrology
I am sure that there are even more astrology branches out there. If you are aware of anything that I missed out, please let me know using the contact form.
Your feedback will always be highly appreciated!

Really fantastic your post. I look forward to future posts.
In common usage, horoscope often refers to an astrologer’s interpretation, usually through a system of Sun sign astrology or based on calendar significance of an event, as in Chinese astrology.
